Americans Do Well At Oliviers
Americans and American productions did well at last night’s Olivier awards in London — the closest they come over there to the Tonys. ” Spring Awakening,” whose Aneurin Barnard is pictured, didn’t last long in the West End, but it found favor with Olivier judges. “Spring” won Best New Musical, and various other awards, while American writer Katori Hall’s “The Mountaintop” upset the favorite, Jez Butterworth’s “Jerusalem,” for Best New Play. (“The Mountaintop” is skedded to open on Broadway this fall.) Biggest shock, at least for Broadway watchers: the Debbie Allen-directed revival of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” which didn’t score a single Tony nom when on Broadway, won the Olivier for Best Revival.
