Winslet “Mildred Pierce” To HBO
The news that “Mildred Pierce The Miniseries” has found a home at HBO doesn’t depress me as the thought of some film classic remakes usually does. For one thing, the miniseries will be directed by Todd Haynes, who showed in his superbly evocative “Far From Heaven” that he knows how to recreate a period feel with taste. For another, Kate Winslet will assume the Joan Crawford, Oscar-winning role as the title character: a waitress who claws her way up to wealth, only to be rewarded with rank ingratitude from her scheming daughter. This could be Winslet’s Emmy. Haynes’s, too.
