Trying To Like “Modern Family”

While awaiting the return of “Glee” on Wednesday nights, I’m taking a closer look at “Modern Family.” My biggest problem with the show is that it rarely makes me laugh. I can’t look at Ed O’Neill without thinking of Al Bundy. And the writing is too often strained — a joke last night about the Supremes should have been expunged in the first rewrite. But at least “Modern Family” has the whiff of originality about it; to quote Joan Crawford (speaking about martinis) in “Humoresque”: It’s “an acquired taste, like Ravel.”
