Blanchett Pokes Fun At Her Blanche
While Meryl Streep was beating herself in the Best Actress/Comedy category at the Golden Globes, way across the Pacific another screen goddess, Cate Blanchett, was also her own toughest competition. At the Sydney theatre awards, Cate was honored for playing Blanche DuBois in “A Streetcar Named Desire.” Her self-mocking acceptance speech: “[Winning] does give me exquisite pleasure to pip the ubiquitous and, in my opinion, the much over-rated Cate Blanchett. I was at NIDA [National Institute of Dramatic Art] with her and she was a shit.” Here’s what La Streep said about Blanchett’s Blanche: “I thought I’d seen that play, I thought I knew all the lines by heart, because I’ve seen it so many times, but I’d never seen the play until I saw [Cate’s] performance.”
