Give Doris Day An Oscar Already!

doris22Director Douglas McGrath makes an argument that I and many others have been making for years: Doris Day should get an honorary Oscar. “No one is more deserving,” McGrath writes, adding that “there is a case to be made for honoring her because of her range (e.g. as Ruth Etting in “Love Me or Leave Me”). My Hollywood spies suggest that when the Academy has put out feelers toward Doris about showing up to collect an Oscar they haven’t exactly been encouraged. For years now, the only thing that matters to her is the rescue of animals. That’s highly admirable, but I think even Dodie’s own creatures would excuse her for an evening to, at long last, be honored.
