Kristin Pulls Out Of “Night Music”
I’m pulverized by this latest news: Kristin Scott Thomas (pictured) has pulled out of the Paris production of “A Little Night Music.” She had signed up for a February run of the Sondheim show in Paris, but has exited owing to a foot injury. Her co-star, Leslie Caron, will now perform with Kristin’s replacement, Greta Scacchi. If I ruled the world, here would have been my solution: Caron and Scott Thomas would have switched parts. Caron’s role, Madame Armfeldt, does the entire show in a wheelchair, so a foot injury wouldn’t have mattered. And Caron is ageless, so she could have pulled off the younger character, Desiree (soft lighting helps). This would have meant Caron’s line in ‘Send In the Clowns,’ about “losing my timing this late in my career,” would have made sense, unlike in the current Broadway version. When the youthful Catherine Zeta-Jones sings that lyric most of the audience is silently saying, “I think not.”
