L.A. A Theatre Town? Not!
Los Angeles has many talented actors and many fine theaters. But no matter how much of a case L.A. Times critic Charles McNulty tries to make for La-La Land as a serious theatre town, I’m not convinced. To be a serious theatre town (London, New York), you also have to have a serious theatre culture, and to have a serious theatre culture you have to have a critical mass of people talking about theatre obsessively. L.A. just doesn’t have that. Most L.A. folk will go to a play or musical when visiting New York, but almost never go to theatre back home. That’s just a fact.
