Mary Travers Dies At 72
As a young child, I had no idea that the songs of Peter, Paul, and Mary had hidden meanings (“Puff, the Magic Dragon”) or political import (“If I Had A Hammer”). To me, there were just catchy tunes that relieved the boredom of more juvenile nursery rhymes. To hear that the group’s Mary Travers has died makes not only the child in me sad; it makes sad the old-fogey adult in me who wishes today’s pop music occasionally had social-justice content.
