Plummer & Mirren As The Tolstoys
While audiences at the Venice film festival were eating up George Clooney and Vera Farmiga in “Up in the Air,” people at the Telluride fest in Colorado were cheering for Michael Hoffman’s “The Last Station,” starring Christopher Plummer as an elderly Tolstoy and Helen Mirren as his wife, Sofya. The photo I’m using from the film gives the idea that the relationship was soft and loving. Hah! Sofya’s diaries are excoriating about her husband, and Tolstoy’s remarks about her aren’t much nicer. I hope the movie isn’t as sentimental as the photograph — that would be a travesty.
