“Prime Suspect” Gets U.S. Edition
Here we go again: back in the mid-1990s, there was serious talk of developing an American version of “Prime Suspect,” the British detective show that vaulted Helen Mirren to stardom in the role of inspector Jane Tennison. Jane Fonda was supposedly interested in Mirren’s role then, but Mirren told journalist James Wolcott that Fonda should keep her “bloody hands” off the thing. Now, in the wake of all the older-women investigators on TV (Kyra Sedgwick, Holly Hunter), there’s a renewed effort to make Jane a Yank. I’m not hopeful that this one will cross the Atlantic successfully.
