New Whitney CD: True Comeback?
On Monday, Arista will release “I Look To You,” Whitney Houston’s first mainstream-studio recording in seven years. One look at some of the song titles — “Like I Never Left” and “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” — and you see how directly the label is positioning this CD as a comeback album. There’s only one problem: authentic comeback stories — Tina Turner in 1984, Mickey Rourke last year — tend to happen organically. You can’t completely package them in advance. Which is why I suspect that the new Whit may be a comeback but not a Comeback.
