Nichols To Direct “Deep Water”
Mike Nichols (pictured) will direct and Joe Penhall will write “Deep Water,” an adaptation of the 1957 Patricia Highsmith novel. Penhall most recently adapted the Cormac McCarthy novel “The Road.” Nichols had been announced last year for a remake of the Kurosawa classic “High and Low,” with David Mamet scripting, but, as LemonWade was the first to tell you, he decided not to make that picture. As for the Highsmith adaptation, that’s good news. She of course wrote “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” which was turned into a highly memorable movie ten years ago starring Matt Damon. The director of that one — the late, much-missed Anthony Minghella — once told me in an interview that he had considered casting Nichols in the movie as Ripley’s father; the role went to James Rebhorn.
