“Streetcar”: Leigh Or Brando?

In this Critic’s Pick video from the New York Times, A.O. Scott analyzes “A Streetcar Named Desire.” He discusses how Marlon Brando’s performance as Stanley Kowalski both on Broadway and in the film shifted the focus of the work away from the character of Blanche DuBois and on to Stanley. It’s true that Brando pulled focus from her, for good or bad. But I don’t think Vivien Leigh’s ghost need stir in its sleep: her movie performance as Blanche is at least as memorable as Brando’s.
