“Spider-Man” Caught In Web?
Variety asks: ‘Should Broadway’s Spidey sense be tingling? Rumors have spread among legiters that the production sked for incoming mega-musical “Spider-Man, Turn Off the Dark” may be threatened.’ Bringing a show this big into port is a hazardous enterprise, so I think it’s a little early to be worried here. If I were an investor, I’d be much more concerned that this musical, capitalized north of $35 million, will ever turn a profit. And opening the show directly on Broadway, with no out-of-town tryout and in front of all those prying eyes, is also a big gamble. I’m hoping “Spider-Man” is good, rather than a giant exercise in ego for its creators — Julie Taymor and Bono chief among them.
