So you thought Buckingham Palace’s musical taste over the past century ran exclusively to Broadway show tunes (a favorite of Princess Margaret, who thought she could play the piano, and her Queen Mummy)? Not so fast: It turns out that the monarch’s London residence has made an unlikely appearance on a shortlist of venues that have been nominated for their key role in the development of jazz. Highlight: in 1932, Louis Armstrong broke with strict protocol by dedicating a song to King George V with the words: “This one’s for you, Rex.” Hah-cha-cha-cha-cha!
