“Blithe Spirit” Recoups Investment
The news that the Broadway revival of “Blithe Spirit” recouped its investment is wonderful. (Thanks in part to the drawing power of its star, Angela Lansbury.) But “Blithe”‘s success underlines what I said months ago about all the plays that opened in the spring: there was no way that most of them would re-coup their investments. Alas I’ve turned out to be correct. Of the dozen or so straight plays that opened in this period in commercial runs, only “God of Carnage,” “Exit the King,” and “Blithe Spirit” recouped.
