Rufus’s Opera Opens In Manchester

rebecca-bottone-as-marie-001Rufus Wainwright’s opera, “Prima Donna,” which was dropped by the Metropolitan in New York, has premiered in Manchester, England. Some reviews are strong. To wit: Wainwright has ‘written a love song to opera, soaked in the perennial operatic themes of loss, betrayal, delusion and nostalgia, and saturated in the musical styles of opera’s golden age.’ The New York Times was less impressed. The composer turned up at the opening dressed as Verdi. Of course he did.
