Pina Bausch: Not My Teacup
I sometimes thought that choreographer Pina Bausch, who died today, was not German but British, since her work was generally nasty, brutish, and not short. I stopped going to see her work at BAM, her New York outpost, long ago, but from time to time thought I should revise my estimate, especially after I saw a snippet of her stuff in Almodovar’s “Talk To Her.” But, no, I’d been burned too many times before. In spite of my disaffection, I strive to be even-handed, and so provide a more generous assessment of this Teutonic (in every sense) artist.
