Classic Music Exploding In China
Western classical music, banned in Chairman Mao’s Cultural Revolution of 1966-76, has exploded in popularity. Just as its government has become a leading economic power, China is solidifying its international power in classical music. Millions study the piano and string instruments, and many of the world’s most popular classical soloists — led by pianist Lang Lang, pictured — are Chinese. In the 20th century, young American classical instrumentalists and singers went to Europe to establish a career. Now China is the mecca.
