Michael Jackson didn’t die young like so many other members of the rock pantheon, yet it almost seems as if he had. Maybe it had something to do with his Peter Pan fascination (and he dreamed of making a movie about Peter Pan, long after he was too old to star in it.) Maybe it had something to do with his associations, benevolent and less so, with children. Or maybe Michael always seemed like a troubled child, who despite having the top-selling album of all time, never quite grew up. We need to enjoy all the tributes to him (from around the world, especially, where love for him stayed steady even as his reputation in the U.S. became more sullied), because the hunt for ghoulish details (addiction to painkillers, etc.) has already begun.
