More Bombast From Spielberg?
Can Steven Spielberg direct or produce anything that doesn’t have a budget big enough to bail out every American family about to be foreclosed? His new “Transformers” movie reportedly cost $200 million, and that’s the pricetag of “The Pacific,” an HBO miniseries to air next year. If this trailer is any indication, “The Pacific” resembles “Band of Brothers,” the previous project of Spielberg and Tom Hanks: an endless parade of American heroism during the Second World War, larded over with endless philosophizing about God and love and what we’re fighting for. Is American television capable of giving us a program that treats war as Tolstoy described it? “Organized murder.” Probably not.
