Restored “Red Shoes” On DVD
It is routinely cited as one of the greatest British films ever made, and maybe the greatest film about ballet — but curiously, few people have ever seen Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s The Red Shoes (1948), starring Moira Shearer (pictured), at the peak of its breathtaking Technicolor splendor. Over time, the film’s original negatives were showing signs of wear, age and neglect. Its ravishing colours were yellowing and mould had attacked the reels. It was a masterpiece in disrepair. But Martin Scorsese has ridden to the rescue, overseeing a remarkable project to restore The Red Shoes. The DVD will be out next month.
