Elia Kazan And Directing
Received opinion has it that Elia Kazan‘s “A Life” is one of the greatest books ever written about show biz. But I’ve never been able to finish it: in the 1950s, Kazan (pictured)— the director of “On the Waterfront,” “A Streetcar Named Desire,” “East of Eden” etc etc — named names, and in so doing ruined lives. I’m more excited about consulting “Kazan on Directing,” a new volume edited by Robert Cornfield. David Thomson’s review is laudatory.
