“This Isn’t What I Voted For”
Bill Maher has just accused Barack Obama of being obsessed with appearing on TV and failing to come through on pre-election promises. (Video here.) I don’t think the problem with the President is that he enjoys the limelight; after all, every time he walks outside the White House it’s the media who obsess about the meaning. We live in a celebrity culture and Obama is the First Celebrity. The much more substantive problem, as Maher understands, is that Obama got elected on a platform of change and so far he hasn’t delivered much big change. People — I’m one of them — are getting restless for results. You can only use the “I inherited this mess” excuse for so long.
