Tony Awards: So Predictable
The opening number was rousing, Neil Patrick Harris (pictured) was a competent, lively host, and there were even a few amusing acceptance speeches (Geoffrey Rush, Marcia Gay Harden) as well as an eloquent one (Roger Robinson). (Plus one, by Alice Ripley, that was well-intentioned but came off as pretentious.) Otherwise, Sunday night’s Tony awards (winners here) were stiflingly predictable. Virtually every winner was the favorite in his or her category. If I hadn’t had to watch it for professional reasons, even I, at about the half-hour mark, would have switched to the NBA playoff game. But what do I know? Some of my friends found the Tony telecast quite enjoyable, and thought the “Billy” boys were “sweet.” (Sigh.)
