Happy Birthday, Teresa Stratas!
If asked to name the greatest live performance I ever experienced, I would probably say Teresa Stratas in Berg’s opera “Lulu,” in 1979. The sensuality, the singing, the ferocious commitment to playing the character with a physical intensity that even few great athletes could match: all were extraordinary. So it gives me great pleasure to salute Stratas — born Anastasia Stratakis to a Greek immigrant family, in Toronto — today as she turns 71.
