Springtime For Hitler In Germany
Mel Brooks‘ whimsical musical “The Producers” (pictured) took the world by storm, winning 15 Tony nominations and captivating audiences as far away as a recent run in Moscow. In continuing its worldwide run, “The Producers” just opened in a country as excited as it was reticent about its arrival, Germany. With so many jabs at Hitler and the Nazi Party, German journalists wondered, ‘Should Germans be allowed to laugh about Hitler?’ Well, at least in critical and commercial terms, yes they should, because the show is as much of a hit in Berlin as it was in New York.
