“Good Hair” Headed To Theatres

rock_chris_341x182Hair is hot. In the wake of the Broadway success of “Hair” the musical, the Hollywood Reporter announces that Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment have acquired worldwide rights to “Good Hair,” produced and co-written by Chris Rock (pictured). The HBO Films documentary, which won a special jury prize when it premiered at Sundance in January, looks at hair culture in the black community. Roadside plans to release the film theatrically in the fall. Rock produced and co-wrote “Hair,” and Jeff Stilson directed. The doc is a travelogue that explores the way hairstyles affect the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships and self-esteem of black people. Ice-T, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symone, Maya Angelou and Rev. Al Sharpton share on-camera stories and observations. I wish Rock had interviewed Star Jones, who once said (alerting the Irony Police): “White women worry about their weight; black women worry about their hair.”
