“Oz” Munchkin Dies At 89

08carroll190Mickey Carroll (pictured), a St. Louis actor and cemetery monument maker, passed away Thursday in the home of his caretaker in Crestwood, Missouri. He was one of the last surviving ‘muchkins’ from the 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz”, in which, at the age of 20, he played the town crier, a soldier, and the fiddler that led Dorothy down the Yellow Brick Road in Munchkinland. I think Mr. Carroll’s picture tells all: he is a kind and gentle man whose greatest thrill was the joy that “Oz” gave to its fans. He once said, ‘It’s not me; it’s the movie. When they see me, they think of their childhood, and it makes them smile.’
