“Joe Turner” Opens On Broadway
The Broadway opening last night of “Joe Turner’s Come and Gone,” which I attended, was packed to the rafters. Lots of celebs showed up: Julianne Moore, Edie Falco, Spike Lee, most of “Law and Order,” and Samuel L. Jackson, whose wife, LaTanya Richardson Jackson, is in the play’s cast. The party afterwards was right down the block on West 44th Street, at the Millennium Hotel. You can always tell how much of a successful run is shaping up by how late people stay, and by how many cocktails they imbibe. In both categories, the signs were good. The New York Times review of the show is a rave. If you want to see a great American play with a top-notch ensemble (led by, among others, Chad Coleman, pictured), “Joe Turner” is it.
