“Night” Watch: Sondheim Latest
Now I hear that the plan to bring Trevor Nunn‘s production of Sondheim’s “A Little Night Music” from London (where it’s playing until July 25) to Broadway isn’t dead after all. But if this is to be a commercial transfer (rather than a move to the nonprofit Roundabout, as happened with a recent production of “Sunday in the Park”) then the producers would be foolish to do it without a star attached — someone who could sell tickets on Broadway as Desiree. Patti LuPone? Bernadette Peters? Glenn Close, who was supposed to do it years ago, before “Damages” took over her life? Stars of recent American productions and benefits are iffy: Victor Garber‘s doing “Present Laughter” on Broadway next season. Vanessa Redgrave‘s unlikely, since her “Night Music” involved Natasha Richardson. But the Desiree casting is key. My thought for the day: They could do a lot worse than Christine Ebersole (pictured).
