Cage Caught In The Money Cage
“Knowing,” starring Nicolas Cage (pictured), will be the number one movie of this weekend, elbowing aside bromance “I Love You, Man” and Julia Roberts’ high-gloss vehicle, “Duplicity.” Critic Owen Gleiberman asks the question that has needled Cage watchers ever since his Oscar-winning performance in the 1996 movie “Leaving Las Vegas“: why did one of America’s most gifted actors become a hack for hire? Money quote: “In his cheesy paycheck films, Cage always seems to be cast as some sort of boozing, disheveled film-noir lost soul, and the roles have added up over time into a kind of unconscious confessional symbolism. It’s as if Cage were saying that he’s aware of the toll his sell-out is taking on him.”
