“Madame De Sade”: Pure Torture?
Ingmar Bergman‘s production of Yukio Mishima’s play “Madame de Sade” is one of the three or four greatest theatrical experiences of my life. So when I saw that the drama was being revived in London, my hopeful side soared while my realistic side shivered. Judging from the reviews (here and here), the latter impulse won. Lightning hasn’t struck twice; one critic calls the production, which stars Rosamund Pike and Judi Dench (pictured), “pure theatrical torture.”
