Steve Martin Pays for Banned Play
Steve Martin (pictured) has offered to pay for an off-campus production of his 1993 play “Picasso at the Lapine Agile”, which was banned from an Oregon school. The rehearsals were stopped at La Grande High School after parents submitted a petition signed by 137 people stating that they objected to the adult content found in the play, which imagines a meeting between Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein. In a letter to the local paper, Martin offered to pay for the production off-campus because he wanted to keep the play “from acquiring a reputation that it does not deserve”. I support Mr. Martin’s crusade to keep the freedom of expression in the theatre alive.
