Reality TV: Much More Diverse

Say what you will about reality-TV shows: they’re inane, they cater to the lowest common denominator, they’re all about tits and ass, they’re not unscripted. But in one area they kick scripted TV’s ass: diversity. According to the San Jose Mercury News, “the lead characters in all but a handful of prime-time scripted shows this season are white — and usually young and affluent. In contrast, reality programs consistently feature a broader range of people when it comes to race, age, class, and sexual orientation.”
