“Taken” Scores At Box Office
Variety reports:
The Liam Neeson action-thriller “Taken” scored a historic touchdown at the domestic box office in proving for the first time that male-driven pics can successfully open on Super Bowl weekend.
Film grossed an estimated $24.6 million from 3,183 runs, the second-best Super Bowl opener after last year’s tween girl hit “Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both World Concert Tour” ($31.1 million), according to Rentrak.
Studio have long steered clear of debuting male-favored titles in this slot because of the steep drop in theater traffic on Sunday. Instead, they use the weekend to rollout horror titles and romantic comedies, two female-driven genres.
