Rex Analyzes The Critics’ Awards
“Slumdog Millionaire” swept the Critics’ Choice Awards last night, even though “Milk” — Josh Brolin, Emile Hirsch, and Sean Penn are pictured — took the ensemble acting award. (Blogger Andy Towle speculates that the trio have decided to coordinate their facial hair in time for awards season.) After the jump, LemonWade’s Oscar expert, Rex Okpodu, looks at all the winners and what they mean about the race for the Academy Awards.
Best Comedy Movie: Tropic Thunder
I HAVE NO VIEW HERE – HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH OSCAR
Best Acting Ensemble: Milk
DOES NOT TRANSLATE INTO OSCAR BEST PIC BUT SOLIDIFIES ITS PLACE ON THE BIG FIVE. PREPARE FOR THE TALK OF AN UPSET OVER SLUMDOG IF MILK ALSO TAKES THIS AT THE SAG.
BEST ENSEMBLE DOES NOT MEAN BEST PICTURE!!!
Best Young Actor/Actress: Dev Patel
LOOKING STRONGER FOR EITHER BEST ACTOR OR SUPPORTING. REMEMBER HE PLAYS THE TITLE ROLE AND OSCAR VOTERS PUT YOU IN A CATEGORY IRRESPECTIVE OF WHERE YOU OR YOUR STUDIO CAMPAIGNS FOR — REMEMBER KEISHA CASTLE IN “WHALE RIDER”
Best Writer: Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire
WILL FIGURE IN THE SCREEN PLAY CATEGORY AND COULD EVEN TAKE IT THIS IF SLUMDOG IS ON A MINI SWEEP
Best Action Film: The Dark Knight
WITH THE PGA AND DGA IN HAND, LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THE BIG 5 AT THE OSCARS
Best Composer: A.R. Rahman, Slumdog Millionaire
DITTO ABOVE COMMENTS ON MINI-SWEEP
Best Song: Bruce Springsteen, The Wrestler
SHOULD ADD TO HIS OSCAR FOR PHILADELPHIA (1994 OSCARS)
Best Documentary: Man On Wire
NO COMMENT HERE
Best Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
AS BRENDAN POSTED YESTERDAY, THEY SHOULD PLANT THIS OSCAR ON HIS GRAVE NOW!
Best Supporting Actress: Kate Winslet, The Reader
SEE COMMENTS ON DEV PATEL (ABOVE). WINSLET COULD END UP HERE (AS CAMPAIGNED) OR IN LEAD FOR THIS DUE TO OSCAR VOTERS’ PREFERENCE. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE FOR HER TO BE IN LEAD FOR BOTH FILMS SO HERE IS HOPING HER PHONY CAMPAIGN FOR THE READER (SHE IS THE LEAD AFTER ALL) PAYS OFF
Best Foreign Language Film: Waltz With Bashir
LOOKS LIKELY TO BE THE OSCAR WINNER
Best Animated Feature: WALL·E
I HATE THAT PEOPLE KEEP MENTIONING WALL-E FOR BEST PICTURE WHEN THE ANIMATORS HAVE THEIR OWN CATEGORY. IT’S NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. AT BEST, THEY WILL ADD A SCREENPLAY TO THIS — A LA FINDING NEMO, SHREK, THE INCREDIBLES, ETC
Best Movie Made for TV: John Adams
NO COMMENT
Best Actress: tie!!
Meryl Streep, Doubt; Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
THIS IS WHERE THE OSCAR RACE REALLY GETS INTERESTING SINCE NONE OF THE ACTRESSES ARE LIKELY TO BE IN A BEST PICTURE NOMINEE.
I GIVE THE EDGE TO STREEP FOR BEING THE MOST NOMINATED ACTRESS IN HISTORY AND WHO HAS NOT WON IN 25 YEARS. PLUS THERE’S THE AMERICAN FACTOR AFTER TWO YEARS OF NON-AMERICANS. PLUS, OSCAR LIKES TO MAKE A NEW RECORD: SHE WILL EQUAL JACK NICHOLSON FOR 3 IF SHE WINS. PLUS SHE IS COMING OFF THE BIGGEST HIT OF HER CAREER, “MAMMA MIA.”
HATHAWAY COULD GET THIS DUE TO THE INGENUE/BELLE OF THE BALL FACTOR.
MEANWHILE, KATE WINSLET IS OVERDUE. PLUS, SHE HAS REFRESHINGLY SAID SHE WANTS THE BLOODY OSCAR AND IS TIRED OF HAVING THAT ” I AM SO HAPPY FOR YOU” FACE SHE HAS HAD TO GIVE 5 TIMES SO FAR!
Best Actor: Sean Penn, Milk
BARRING A MISSTEP IN THE SEASON, HE LOOKS LIKELY TO JOIN DANIEL DAY-LEWIS AS A TWO-TIME OSCAR WINNER
Best Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire
IF HE WINS THE DGA, THEN THE OSCAR IS HIS
Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire
LOOKS LIKE THE FRONTRUNNER FOR NOW, ESPECIALLY IF THE GLOBE IS ADDED SUNDAY, AND THEN THE BAFTA AND SAG. NOTE, THE TALK WILL BE OF AN UPSET IN THE COMING WEEKS AND THAT COULD HAPPEN IF OSCAR VOTERS FEEL TAKEN FOR GRANTED OR IF THE GLOBE IS ADDED AND SAG GOES TO MILK OR ANY OTHER FILM.
I HATE PEOPLE WHO TYPE IN CAPS AND DON’T RECOGNIZE WALL-E AS THE CLASSIC IT IS!
