Controversy of the Day: No. 1
The Chicago Sun-Times reports: A play at the Goodman Theatre that features a white actress in blackface — Kate Valk, pictured — is sparking controversy. Late Wednesday afternoon, hours before the opening of The Wooster Group production of Eugene O’Neill’s play, “The Emperor Jones,” at the Goodman, Third World Press sent out e-mails asking for a boycott of the show. It also had asked for a boycott of a panel discussion scheduled earlier in the day at the Chicago Cultural Center titled “Performing Other: Constructing Race and Gender Onstage and Off.”
