Sculptor Robert Graham Dies
Like other famous artists of the 20th century, sculptor Robert Peña Graham lived larger than life. He created massive, bronze sculptures around the nation that required legions of extra hands to erect.
He married a movie star and clinked cocktail glasses with Hollywood’s elite.
He died Saturday in a Santa Monica hospital with his family at his side, including his wife, Academy Award winning actress Angelica Huston. Graham was 70.
“His work was truly influential and he will forever remain an icon in this state,” Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Sunday in a statement.
Graham was much admired in Los Angeles, where his “Great Bronze Doors,” have welcomed thousands to the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels. Millions watching the 1984 Olympics saw his “Olympic Gateway,” the headless figures of a muscle-bound man and woman at the entrance to Memorial Coliseum.
