Flimm To Head Berlin Opera
According to the New York Times:
Jurgen Flimm, the German theater and opera director, has been named the artistic director of Deutsche Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and will take over the position on Sept. 1, 2010, Agence-France Presse reported. Mr. Flimm announced this year that he would not continue in his role as artistic director of the Salzburg Festival in Austria, a position he has held since 2006, when his contract expires in 2011. He had clashed with Thomas Oberender, the festival’s drama director. At the Staatsoper he will replace Peter Mussbach, who has frequently feuded with its musical director, Daniel Barenboim. In April Mr. Mussbach denounced Mr. Barenboim and Klaus Wowereit, the mayor of Berlin, for using “mafia†tactics against him after the mayor said he would not renew Mr. Mussbach’s contract with the state-run opera company.
