The Cortlandt, New York house of Aaron Copland, where the composer lived for 30 years before dying in 1990 at the age of 90, has been designated a National Historic Landmark. It is the only national landmark site in the country devoted to a classical musician. It is fitting that Copland should have the honor. His musical sound signifies “American” for millions of people.
