NY Times Top 10 Books of 2008
It’s absurd that seven of the ten are published by Knopf. (The Times, which thinks of itself as such a bastion of corporate diversity, apparently doesn’t believe in publishing-house diversity.) Still, it’s hard to argue with most of the titles. I loved Joseph O’Neill’s “Netherland,” as well as Julian Barnes’s “Nothing To Be Frightened Of.” I haven’t caught up yet with Toni Morrison’s “A Mercy,” but I intend to, and “2666,” by Roberto Bolano, is a messy masterpiece, which (call me a snob!) I read in the original Spanish. That took a while.
