Maher, Mobile Slighted By Oscars
Once again, the announcement of the 15 semi-finalists for the Academy Award in the Documentary Feature category has some regrettable omissions. Namely: Bill Maher’s “Religulous,” which in my view is way more provocative and less facile than any Michael Moore docs the Academy has honored in the past; and Margaret Brown’s “The Order of Myths,” about Mardi Gras in Mobile. I’m not the only one who thinks the slighting of Brown’s picture to be regrettable: here’s reinforcement from Andrew O’Hehir at Slate.
