Olivia de H. Gets Medal From Bush
Last year, author Harper Lee (see story just below) received a medal from President Bush. Yesterday, it was the turn of Olivia de Havilland, 92, to step up for an honor: a National Medal of Arts. The actress made the trip from her home in Paris. She is best known for playing Melanie in “Gone with the Wind,” but my favorite Olivia portrayal is in the 1948 picture “The Snake Pit,” where her character, mistakenly trapped in a psychiatric hospital, at one highly confused moment blurts out: “Why do they keep moving all the doors?”
