Mortier To City Opera: Drop Dead!
New York City Opera, already beset with financial difficulties due to a forced sabbatical from Lincoln Center while the company’s theater is being renovated, received a further blow today: Gerard Mortier (pictured), who had been hired to revivify the company’s creative fortunes, withdrew as general manager and artistic director — before he had officially taken over. Whoever comes next is going to face a Bush-to-Obama mountain of transitional challenges.
