“Before Night Falls” To Be Opera

The Fort Worth Opera has announced that it will stage the world premiere of “Before Night Falls,” based on the autobiography of gay Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, which also inspired the 2000 movie starring Javier Bardem (pictured). The composer is Cuban-American Jorge Martin, whose best-known opera is the quite sublime, one-act “Tobermory.” May I politely suggest that I await “Before Night Falls” with a hell of a lot more eagerness than Charles Wuorinen’s “Brokeback Mountain” adaptation, commissioned by New York City Opera but now in doubt there due to the departure of incoming artistic director Gerard Mortier.
