Does Either One Ever Have Fun?
One observation about tonight’s Presidential debate, other than Obama spent too much time on the defensive and McCain couldn’t suppress his petulant split-screen reactions: neither candidate made a single reference to anything having to do with pop culture — or anything we might consider cultural as opposed to political. I realize that issues like education, taxes, and energy don’t automatically lend themselves to citing Britney Spears or Tina Fey, but one of the things that has made all the debates duller than they had to be was the sense that neither candidate can relate the things that people obsess about (movies, music, games, TV) to a broad discussion about the State of the World. Obama lectures parents about turning off the TV and McCain doesn’t seem as if he’s seen a movie past “Dirty Harry” or a recent TV show other than “24.” Dullsville!
