Sondheim’s One “Night” Only
Thirty-five years after its premiere, my favorite Sondheim show, “A Little Night Music,” has not been revived on Broadway. While waiting (and waiting) for that blissful day to happen, I will have to content myself with the one-night-only gala concert reading of the musical, to take place on Broadway on January 12. Sponsored by the Roundabout Theater Company, it will star Natasha Richardson; her real-life mom, Vanessa Redgrave; and Victor Garber. I saw Garber a few years back in a fine production of the show in Los Angeles, directed by Scott Ellis, who will also do the duties for the Roundabout gala. Maybe if the evening’s a success, this cast could be coaxed back for a longer run. But, please: in a theater un petit peu more intimate than the barn (the Nokia Theater) where the Roundabout gala will occur.
