Critics Nix But Chicks Dig Flicks
Film critic Anthony Lane recently sneered, “Taken together, ‘Sex and the City,’ ‘Mamma Mia!,’ and ‘The Women’ add up to a spectacular trilogy of the inane, and to point that out is not the prerogative of the misogynist or the killjoy. It’s the view of someone who thinks that women deserve better from the movies.” Lane and other critics can decry these chick flicks all they want; meanwhile, the DVD sales of “Sex and the City” are record-setting, and “Mamma Mia” is on track to become the most successful screen musical of all time. Further proof, methinks, that culture consumers don’t give a damn what reviewers say.
