“Hairspray” To Close on Broadway?
I’m hearing from a pretty solid source that “Hairspray,” that tsunami of joy that has been on Broadway since the summer of 2002, will be closing in New York after the Christmas holidays. Of course, this doesn’t mean the show, based on the 1988 movie directed by John Waters, will be shutting up shop. Far from it: “Hairspray” continues to tour the U.S. and productions keep springing up all over the world. What’s more, Waters is working on a musical sequel, presumably to be directed by Adam Shankman, who helmed the hit 2007 movie of the tuner. Of course, if business picks up on Broadway, it could keep going there, too. But I wouldn’t bet your 401(k) on it.
